The Alarming Trend of Rejecting the Church
In recent years, there has been an alarming trend among certain so-called “revival centers” and “deliverance centers” that publicly reject being identified as churches. These places, led by individuals who often disguise themselves as spiritual leaders, refuse to call their gatherings “churches,” instead opting for terms that distance them from traditional Christian communities. This shift is not only concerning but also indicative of deeper, more sinister motives at play.
The Dangers of Rejecting the Church
Undermining the True Church: By refusing to identify as a church, these centers undermine the biblical concept of the church as the body of Christ. In Ephesians 4:11-12, it is written, “So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up.” These roles are essential for building up the church, yet these leaders reject them, claiming they are not called to traditional pastoral duties.
Creating Confusion: These leaders often make statements such as “We are not your Sunday morning church” and “Don’t expect churchy things.” This rhetoric creates confusion among believers who seek a spiritual home where they can grow in faith and community. The Bible clearly states in Hebrews 10:25, “not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” Gathering together as a church is a biblical mandate, yet these leaders reject it.
Promoting Sensationalism: These centers thrive on sensationalism, often boasting about supernatural experiences and testimonies that serve to elevate their own status rather than glorify God. True pastors and spiritual leaders are called to be humble servants, as Jesus taught in Matthew 20:26, “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.” However, these leaders focus on self-promotion and sensationalism, misleading their followers.
Disregarding Pastoral Care: It is particularly alarming when these leaders openly state that they will not provide pastoral care in times of need. A true pastor is called to shepherd their flock, as Jesus described in John 10:11, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” The dismissive attitude toward pastoral responsibilities, such as visiting the sick or offering comfort in times of crisis, is a clear sign of their lack of genuine pastoral calling.
The Contradictions and Hypocrisy
These leaders publicly criticize traditional churches while simultaneously trying to build their own followings through sensationalism and deception. They remove worship screens and chairs, creating an uncomfortable and tense atmosphere, far from the welcoming environment that a true church should provide. They claim to be different and authentic, yet their actions reveal a lack of genuine love and care for their followers.
They also boast about running a “different race” and having a unique calling, yet contradict themselves by stating that God did not call them to traditional church roles. This contradictory stance is confusing and misleading. If God did not call them to be pastors, to conduct Bible studies, and to care for children, what then is their purpose?
The True Church and Its Calling
The true church is called to be a place of love, community, and service. In Acts 2:42, we see the early church devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. This model of community and mutual support is the essence of the church. Jesus Himself emphasized the importance of loving one another in John 13:34-35, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
Conclusion
Beware of those who disguise themselves as spiritual leaders but reject the true essence of the church. Their actions and words reveal their true motives—manipulation, sensationalism, and self-promotion. True spiritual leaders are humble, loving, and committed to serving their flock with integrity and care.
